Tuawera
Ka ora pea i a koe, Ka ora i au - We are all important to each other.
Tuawera (Cave Rock) is the second landmark our ākonga navigate to on their journey through Sumner School. Tuawera houses our ākonga in Years 3 and 4.
Our People - Tuawera
The Tuawera team consists of four composite classes of Year 3 and 4 learners and teachers. Our teaching team consists of Kristy Neill, Team Leader and teacher in Room 10), Jo Covell-Burger (Room 11), Kim Wilson (Room 12) and Rachel Kahi (Room 9). Lisi Reid is our release teacher, teaching in Tuawera two days a week. Breda Williams is our fantastic Learning Support Worker for Tuawera.
Learning in Tuawera
Our team is focused on further developing the foundational literacy and numeracy skills that our learners bring from Rapanui (Junior Team). We have a strong focus on emotional and social wellbeing, encouraging our learners to develop their Character Strengths and their social skills.
Our Literacy programme is integrated, with reading and writing taking place every day, as well as regular spelling and handwriting. Our Maths programme is taught five days a week, with mixed ability and collaborative groupings across the teaching team.
We use Ipads and Chromebooks as part of the daily learning programme and have a strong focus on developing our responsibilities as users of digital technology. This enables our learners to use these tools safely and confidently. We introduce the basic skills of ICT and use apps to support our ability to Learn, Create, Share.
