Canterbury Athletics Day Today students competed at the Canterbury Athletics. There were over a thousand athletes representing their schools. There were 156 different schools competing for the title of the best in Canterbury. Sumner students did really well in there events and had a great day. The 12 year old boys relay team won their final and Mimi came first in ten year old high jump. Well done to all students who competed. A big thanks to Mr Cole and Ms Horgan. |

Music Instrument Testing Today students were able test out instruments that they may be interesting in learning next year. Many of the students who already play a range of musical instruments assisted with those who were keen to give it ago. |

Ruud Kleinpaste “The Bugman” Today 3 students attended the Innovation showcase. They heard from Rudd Klenpaste known as “The Bugman” on Entomology. There was also an opportunity to handle some Weta. |

St Johns First Aid Course The Year 5 - 6 students took part in the St Johns First Aid Course. They looked at basic first aid skills to use in case of an emergency. |

Year 0 - 4 Athletics Day Today the Year 0 - 4 students participated in their Athletics day. This involved spring, sack throwing, high jump and even sack racing. The students have been practicing their athletics skills. Well done to everyone who participated today. |

Chinese Prize Giving Tonight 10 students from the Year 7 and 8 Team received an award from the Confucius Institute of Canterbury. The students received a certificate and a prize for their participation during Mandarin lesson each week. It was a wonderful evening, with plenty of Chinese dancing. |

Year 5 - 8 Triathlon The year 5 to 8 students competed in the School Triathlon today. The students had the option to compete in a team or as an Individual. All students that placed in the individuals top 4 have the opportunity to compete in the Canterbury competition placed on the Wednesday 29 November. The students have been training for a number of weeks and the whole of Sumner School wish them the very best at Canterbury competition. Congratulations to all of the students who competed. A massive thanks to all the parents that helped. |

Year 5 - 8 Zone Athletics Competition Today the students who placed in the Sumner School Athletics competed in the Zone Athletics held at Hansen Park. There were more than 70 students who took part in this event. Those that placed will now go on to the Canterbury Zone Athletics event being held in Ashburton. |

Aupaki Kahui Ako Music Festival Last night the Aupaki Kahui Ako Schools got together for a wonderful night of musical talent. This featured a range of different performances, which included Sumner School, Redcliffs School, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Heathcote Valley School, Linwood College, Mt Pleasant School, Lyttelton School, concert and training bands, school choirs, as well as many others. It was the perfect night to meet up with all the schools in our Aupaki Kahui Ako. A big thanks to all the people that participated, as well as the organisers, and supporters. |

Year 5 - 8 Athletics Day Today the students in the Year 5 - 8 teams competed in the School Athletics Day. They participated in high jump, long distance, sprints, discus and long jump. It was great to see everyone giving it a go and well done to all of the students that placed. |

Christchurch Music Festival Last night the Choir took part in the Christchurch Music Festival held at the CBS Arena. The choir performed a number of songs along side the many schools that take part in this event. Well done to all of the Choir students. |

China Day Today the Confucius Institute teachers introduced the students in traditional Chinese culture as part of China Day. The students took part in making dumplings, dressing up in traditional outfits, painting and learning about traditional dancing and instruments. |

Year 7 & 8 Camp This week the Year 7 and 8 Team went on camp to Pudding Hill Lodge. Students participated in a range of challenges, from rifles and archery, puzzle solving, team building challenges to a stream study. |

Production Week This week the students performed in 2 evening shows and 1 matinee. They have all been working on their parts within the production. Each Team had a focus on Sumner's History, from early Sumner to the future. |

National Robocup Competition This weekend 5 students competed in the National Robocup Competition held in Dunedin. On Friday they attended Techspiration, which was held at the Otago Polytechnic. Then on Saturday they competed in the Robo Rescue and Drama categories. The students have been working hard to prepare for this event over the past few weeks. |

World Character Day Today we joined 125 other countries to celebrate World Character Day. As part of this event we decorated stones with messages of kindness and placed these around the Sumner Community. Our Wellbeing Leaders lead conversations around cultivating character. |

Tech Fest The Tech Fest is a two-day conference held in the Sumner School Hall for students from the six schools that make up the Aupaki Kahui Ako. Students participate in a workshop for the 2 days. The workshops are aimed to appeal to a range of children’s skills and talents such as technology, art, music, film, writing, engineering, creativity and problem solving. |

World Vision Lila, Guy and Damon, our 40 Hour Famine leaders, attended the World Vision Awards Ceremony. We were entertained with a Kapa Haka performance and some very inspiring speeches and stories. Sumner School raised over $8000 for the Child-Friendly Spaces in Syria and were awarded with an Excellence Award. Jenny Cunningham also received an award for the work she does in organising the walk. |

Current Events Quiz Competition Tonight 6 students to part in the annual Current Event Quiz Competition held at Avonhead Primary School. They had to answer a range of current events questions, name flags and find answers in a newspaper. Well done to the students who took part. |

Sumner School Speech Competition Tonight students from the Year 3 - 8 participated in the Sumner School Speech Competition. The Year 3 and 4 recited poems and the Year 5 - 8 Team representatives competed in the Speech Competition. They all had very impressive speeches. Well done to everyone who took part. |

Aupaki CORE Workshop Today four Year 7 and 8 Students attended the Aupaki CORE workshop. They worked collaboratively with students from across our Kahui Ako to design and plan ways to connect Aupaki's students and learning in the future. |

The opening of the Senior Learning Hub Today the whole school and parents gathered together for the opening of the Senior Learning Hub. The blessing of the building took place at 8.00am with Corban Te Aika, and the Kapa Haka students. Ruth Dyson then officially opened the building, with the assistance of the oldest and youngest student cutting the ribbon. The students and parents were invited to have a look around the new hub. |

Robocup Competition Today 5 groups of students competed in the Regional Robocup competition. There were 3 drama groups and 2 Robo rescue groups. Well done to everyone who participated. One Drama group placed 2nd and on Robo rescue placed 3rd. They will now have the opportunity to compete in the National Robocup competition being held in Dunedin. |

Last night the Kapa Haka Students performed at the CBS Arena in the Christchurch Cultural Festival. They have been practicing for the past two terms with Matua Sonny and Tui. It was an amazing performance.

Aupaki Cultural Festival Today the Kapa Haka students performed in the Bays Cluster Cultural Festival held in our school hall. This was a great opportunity for the Kapa Haka group to perform their songs and routine before the big event, the Christchurch Cultural Festival being held at the CBS arena next week. The students have been practicing for two terms. It was a wonderful performance. |

Stu Duval Writing Workshop Today the whole school took part in writing workshops held by Stu Duval. Stu Duval is considered one of New Zealand's master storytellers. He creates worlds through stories and pictures. Students in all of the teams enjoyed his storytelling and wonderful art works. |

Skate Skool Today the Year 7 and 8 students welcomed Scott from the Skate Skool. He demonstrated the correct way to skateboard and use of the safety equipment. Then he introduced a number of students to roller blading. There was a lot of fun had by all of the Year 7 and 8 students. |

Dr Jane Goodall Visit What an amazing privilege it was to have Dr Jane Goodall visit Sumner School today. This visit was a culmination of the Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) inquiry unit all students have been working on this term using Dr Goodall's Roots & Shoots model. This approach encourages participants to contribute to environmental projects in their local area with the view that if everyone does their bit, no matter how small, it will make a big difference to the world. The philosophy of being globally aware, locally active, is something that has been an important part of our school's strategic vision for several years. I would like to acknowledge Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Hamish Cochrane & Dr Billy Osteen from the University of Canterbury for all of their support in bringing Dr Goodall to Sumner. |

African Drum and Dance Today the Year 3 and 4 participated in a drumming workshop held by Koffee. Students learnt a range of African beats to use on the djembes drums. They also learnt a traditional dance, which they then presented at the whole School assembly. |

EPRO8 Challenge - Semi Finals Tonight the Year 7 and 8 Team competed in the EPRO8 semi-finals challenge. They placed 4th, unfortunately there were two 3rd placings. Well done to the Team and all of their amazing building skills. |

PTA Quiz Night The annual PTA Quiz was held in the hall tonight with 24 teams vying for Sumner School trivia supremacy. Congratulations to team Insert Name Here (pictured right) who won last night's quiz. Wig Wednesday Today students from around the school participated in Wig Wednesday to raise money for Child Cancer Foundation. They raised over $600.00. Thank you for everyone who participated in this fundraising event. |

Canterbury Cross Country Today the 12 students competed in the Canterbury Cross Country event held at Halswell Quarry. It was a cold start turned into a beautiful warm mid winter day. Slippery conditions and plenty of water in the ditches added to the cross country spirit, large number of runners often several runners sharing the same finish time. Here are the results. Well done to everyone who participated. Those in red will be going to the next round, Primaries v Intermediates on the 5th July. |

EPRO8 Challenge Year 7 and 8 Tonight four of the Years 7 and 8 participated in the EPRO8 Challenge, which is an engineering, problem solving and innovation competition. The team worked for two and half hours independently to build a variety of structures earning them points. Great fun was had by all. Congratulations to the Years 7 and 8 Team who placed 2nd and have qualified for the semi-finals. |

Poroporo Planting The Gardening Group have been working with Christchurch City Council to help rejuvenate the Port Hills following the devastating fires that started in February this year. A thousand hectares of land were destroyed in the fires, wiping out native plants such as Poruporo. During the ‘Collect, Sow and Grow’ project, the Gardening Club have collected Poroporo fruit, peeled it, found the seeds, sowed them and are now waiting for the seeds to germinate, so that in November it can be replanted back in the Port Hills. |

Pink Ribbon Breakfast Today the Year 7 and 8 girls held a Pink Ribbon Breakfast to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer. All of the food and decorations were pink. The amount raised is currently being counted and will be posted soon. |

Robotics Club Every Wednesday after school 38 Years 5-8 students participate in the Sumner School Robotics Club. During these workshops the students have the opportunity to learn about coding and programming using a range of tools. We hope that some of these lucky children will get the chance to compete in the NZ Robo Cup later in the year. A big thank you to Mrs Granger and Mrs Vine for organising this awesome after school opportunity.. |

Samoan Overseas Learning Experience Our Years 7&8 students returned to school from their Samoan OLE today. They had an amazing adventure which included a range of unique opportunities such as swimming with green sea turtles, snorkeling on coral reefs and visiting the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum. The number one highlight for the children however, was visiting two schools in Upolu and Savai'i. During these visits our students met their pen pals, joined in with classroom activities and even played a very competitive game of rugby. They were also very pleased to see that the shipping container filled with teaching and learning resources was safely delivered to St Mary's School in Apia. The group will be sharing their adventures with parents at a family evening and with the rest of the school at an upcoming assembly. |

New Zealand Sign Language Week The Year 7 and 8 Students learnt a few signs for the deaf. They had a visit from Lydia who taught the Students signs for some of the animals and insects. It was great to learn how to sign a few words for New Zealand Sign Language week. |

Year 5 and 6 Victoria Park Visit This week the Year 5 and 6 Team visit Victoria Park to participate in the Native Nurturing Programme. They explored the contrasting landscapes of the Port Hills at Victoria Park! They discover how the unique Port Hills environment has changed over time and took a multi-sensory walk through majestic Podocarp forest. Students got up close and personal with pests and how these impact on our native and endemic species. |

Year 3 and 4 Victoria Park Visit The students in the Year 3 and 4 Team have been to Victoria Park this week. They looked why the birds, insects and trees are important for a balanced ecosystem. |

Travis Wetlands Visit The Year 7 and 8 Students visited the Travis Wetlands as part of our immersion for inquiry. The students looked at the insects and animals around and in the wetlands. An interesting fact they learnt was that the 95 percent of Christchurch used to be wetlands and now only 3 percent of the Wetlands remains in Christchurch today. |

Samoa Overseas Learning Experience A group of very excited Years 7&8 students left for a week's overseas learning experience in Samoa today. They will involved in a range of activities and visits that will help develop their understanding of Pacific Island culture, language and education. We look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return to school on Monday 15 May. |

Samoa Fundraiser Thank you to all of the people who have contributed to the container of resources we've organised to go to St Mary's School in Apia, Samoa. The container is jam-packed with furniture and equipment from our school community. A special thank you to Redcliffs School and the Sumner Rugby Club who have also donated to the container. It was collected today and is heading by boat to Auckland via Lyttelton then onto Apia. It should be there in time for our students to see when they arrive in early May. Faafetai! |

Glendal Students Visit This week we have had 10 students from Glendal Primary School visit our school from Melbourne. They have been busy learning to surf, visiting Willowbank and Ferrymead and have fun with their host families. |

Zone Swimming Sports Today the Sumner School students who won their events in the School Swimming Sports competed against other schools in the zone. They competed in breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly as well as the relays. The results will be available in the School newsletter. |

Today the students from the Years 5 to 8 competed in the annual school Swimming Sports competition. The events included backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. All of the students participated either in the 25 metres or the 50 metre events. Those that places 1st or 2nd in the 50 metre events will now go through to the Zone Swimming Sports being held next week.

PAL - Physical Activity Leader Conference Today the Year 7 and 8 House Leaders attended the PAL Conference. They were part of the mentoring programme provided by Canterbury Sport. This consisted of on full day of training to grow their school's interest in sport and physical activity. The students had a lot of fun. |

Oderings Garden Show Last week our Gardening Club presented their exhibit at the Oderings Garden Show. The theme for the show was 'Once upon a time...' We focused our display around a story that was written by Aurora especially for the garden show. The story focuses on an abandoned supermarket during the aftermath of the earthquakes. The Gardening Club worked incredibly hard to design an exhibit which showed what a supermarket might look like if the plant life took over the supermarket. They grew their own vegetables, designed the exhibit, made and collected props and painted the backdrop. They were awarded a Bronze Award by the judges. |

Year 3 and 4 Swimming Sports Today the Year 3 and 4 students participated in their annual Swimming Sports Competition. It was a great day and the students enjoyed particpating in the standard races and novelty events. |

Boys Cricket Team Today the boys cricket team played in a series of cricket games. The boys played other schools around Canterbury to get be in with a chance to play at the nationals for Primary Schools Cricket. They played three games, won one of them, unlucky not to win another and had a decent loss against the previous National champions, Medbury. They had an awesome time playing the game they enjoy. I am sure some of the Year sevens will be keen to go and compete again next year. |

Year 3 and 4 Beach Education This week it was the students in Year's 3 and 4's turn to take part in the Surf Life Saving Beach Education programme. Students are taught surf safety rules, how to get out of a rip, sun safety and to learn more about the role of the life guards. |

Teacher Only Day The Sumner School staff have spent the last couple of days preparing for the new year by participating in two teacher only days. A big focus of these professional develop days was learning about collaborative teaching in flexible learning spaces as well as exploring growth mindsets. These mindsets were put to the test with a visit to Escape Artist where they had to solve a series of puzzles to complete a challenge. The staff are excited about seeing all of the students tomorrow and are looking forward to the very exciting year ahead! |
