Sumner School Hall Hire
Our fabulous new hall was opened in 2011 by Prime Minister John Key. It is first and foremost a school building but may be available for hire to groups wishing to use the facility. Conditions of Hire
Any hire of the hall must abide by all fire regulations, City Council by-laws and other rules as stipulated below:

- A maximum of 500 persons in total on the premises.
- The hall must be vacated no later than by 11.00pm.
- Any bar services and/or music must cease by 10.00pm.
- The hall will only be available outside school hours, this includes setting-up for events.
- No smoking, candles, oil burners or other naked flames in the building.
- No inflammable, toxic or dangerous substances in the building.
- No glitter is to be used in the building.
- Decorations will not be placed around the hall without permission from the school first.
- No illegal activity within or illegal use of the building is permitted.
- It is the hirer’s responsibility to ensure that the building is fit for their purpose.
- It is the hirer's responsibility to inform neighbours about the details of any large social event that has the potential to cause a disturbance. This is done be via a letterbox drop and at least one week in advance of the event.
- It is the hirer’s responsibility to know where all fire alarms, fire extinguishers, exits (including fire exits) and are to advise all persons in the building of the location of the fire exits.
- The hirer is responsible for the building during the hire and for following the Exit Checklist on departure.
- The hirer must ensure that suitable security arrangements are made to ensure only invited guests gain access.
- No alterations to the building, fixtures, décor, appliances or equipment can be made.
- All rooms and appliances in the building may only be used for their designed purpose.
- No substances or materials may be put into toilets, sinks or drains that may cause damage or blockage.
- If the activity requires a resource consent from the Christchurch City Council, it is the hirer’s responsibility to organise this and to ensure that the regulations set out in the resource consent are adhered to.
- The hirer is responsible for any damage incurred during the hire. The school must oversee any repairs and therefore must be notified of any damage to the building, fixtures, fittings, appliances or electrical fittings prior to commencement of repairs.
- Only non marking shoes should be worn when using the main hall area. Particularly if the event involves physical activity. Stilettos are not to be worn at any time on the main hall floor.
- Hard balls that may damage windows or walls are not to be used in the hall.
- The hirer shall keep the school indemnified against all claims, actions, losses and expenses which the school may suffer or incur arising out of: a) The neglect or careless use by the hirer, its employees and guests of the building and contents, and b) Any accident, damage or theft to a property or any person arising from any occurrence in or near the building wholly or in part by reason of any act or omission by the hirer, its employees or guests.
- The hirer is to be aware of their obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2016.
- The school reserves the right to visit the premises at any time during the hire.
- All rubbish and recycle materials must be removed from the building and nothing must be left outside for rubbish collection.
- Any food and/or drink spilt on the floor must be removed immediately. NB wet mops are not to be used on the main hall floor. Any specialised carpet cleaning that needs to be carried out as result of food or drink spillage will be at the hirer’s expense.
- All furniture must be returned to original positions.
- If the kitchen is used it must be cleaned, all dishes washed and put away, oven wiped down inside and out, pie warmer cleaned, benches and sink left clean, rubbish removed and floor mopped.
- Given reasonable notice, the school reserves the right to cancel/postpone the hire of the hall if it clashes with school events. There will be hirer will be refunded for any missed sessions.
- Hirer must bring own tea towels and rubbish bags and remove these on departure.
- Before exiting the hall the attached checklist must be completed.
- For hirer’s who have been issued a key: for any action by the hirer that results in a security guard being called to the premises, an additional fee of $90 will charged.
- The school reserves the right to terminate any hire contract if it feels that the conditions of hire are not being adequately met.
