Sumner School Board Talk
It seems hard to believe that it is already time to write the last Boardtalk of 2016 as we come to the end of another busy and full year at Sumner School.
Happily this year has brought the decision that Redcliffs School will remain open. We look forward to continuing our close relationship with them and the other schools in the Bays Cluster next year.
To all new families that have joined us during 2016 - we trust that your children have settled happily into school routines.
We will be saying farewell to a number of teachers this year; Monique Berwick, Christina Fitzgerald, Jill Pears, Jen Smyth and Shelley Twigg. All the very best to each of you in 2017 and thank you for the energy and input that you have given to the pupils of Sumner School.
A huge thank you to all members of staff and management! Our children benefit every day from your insight, enthusiasm, commitment and professionalism. Have a restful and well-deserved break over the holidays.
National Standards Achievement Data
Over the last few weeks the teachers have been working hard to compile the end of Year National Standards data for reading, writing and maths. We are delighted to share these results with our community:
There are 441 children at Sumner School who have been at school for more than one year. Across all the National Standards areas (Reading, Writing and Mathematics) we have either 92% or 93% of our students achieving ‘at’ or ‘above’ the National Standard. This demonstrates the strength of the school across all areas.
School-wide assessment data for 2016 shows that:
- 410 (93%) of our students are achieving at or above the National Standard for Reading. This is a continuation of our results from 2014 and 2015. This shows a high level of consistency with the quality of our results.
- 410 (92%) of our students are achieving at or above the National Standard for Writing. This is a similar level to last year (94%).
- 407 (92%) of our students are achieving at or above the National Standard for Mathematics. This is a continuation of our excellent results from the previous two years.
These results, and the consistency across all curriculum areas are due to the effective teaching and learning practices in place at Sumner School. Learning is differentiated within the classroom and GATE students are catered both within the classroom and as part of an enrichment and extension programme. We also have a strong learning support programme, with additional staffing with highly effective Learning Support Workers supporting the teaching and learning programmes. The Board of Trustees sees the learning needs of our children as imperative to raising student achievement and ensures that funding is available for our children who need support.
Canterbury Block Construction Work
We are looking forward to the commencement of work on the Canterbury Block during the school holidays. This will see the senior students operating from Term 2 of 2017 in a refurbished flexible learning space. This new environment will make easier the collaborative teaching practice and personalised learning from which the students have already been benefiting. It will also help our students develop and strengthen social and collaborative skills.
We believe that it is well aligned with one of the ongoing strategic aims as set out in our school charter of ‘Engaging More Students More Often in More Ways’.
This development is the culmination of many years of thought and planning by this and previous Boards and it is very exciting to see it finally come to fruition. Next year, we also hope to see the start of the detailed design stage of the wider work on our site as set out in the Master Plan under the Canterbury Schools Renewal Plan.
A huge thank you to Amanda Price, the Chair of the PTA and the committed group of parents who do such an incredible job year after year raising funds for our school. These funds, among other things, help purchase equipment that provides many enriching learning opportunities for our children in the classroom. There are some great ideas underway already for next year!
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2016 as you set off on the next stage of your life! And to each family that is leaving the school community this year - thank you for the contribution that you have made during your years at Sumner School.
Have a safe and happy holiday!
