Dear Parents and Caregivers
Tenei te mihi atu kia koutou. Welcome to Emily B, Theia H, Milla S, Blake W and Skilah and Lillie L who have started school recently.
We have had quite a digital flavour to the goings on at Sumner School this week. A real highlight of this was the Aupaki Tech Fest. This event saw around 120 Years 3-8 students from six schools in our Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning) take part in two days of digital workshops around the theme of “Making Connections.”
A range of workshops were offered included robotics, coding, 3D printing and video editing. One very popular workshop was led by teachers and senior students from Linwood College and involved the construction of a real life catapult. As you can image a huge amount of fun was had testing their creation out on the field.
I would like to thank all of the Aupaki teachers who facilitated the workshops and the organising team lead by our Associate Principal Anna Granger for putting this brilliant event together.
Over the next couple of weeks our attention well and truly shifts to the upcoming school-wide production Sumner Time Warp. Tickets are on sale in the Office for the evening performances on Tuesday 19 and Thursday 21 September (6pm) and the matinee performance at 10am on Wednesday 20 September.
Finally, it is with some sadness that I inform you that our Aupaki Sports Coordinator Lawrence Babe will be leaving us this week as he heads off to Hong Kong to take up a professional rugby contract. Lawrence has done a fantastic job in this role and we wish him all the very best for his move north.
Have a great weekend.
Ngā mihi

Senior Winter Sport
This year approximately 95 students from Years 7 and 8 formed eight teams that travelled to Hagley Park to compete in the Primary Schools weekly Winter Sports Competition. All the teams played with excellent team spirit with many achieving some excellent results over 13 weeks of round robin games and then finals. Results of particular note were the senior football teams who placed 1st and 3rd in the A Grade Competition. Sumner Red football team going on to win the league for the fourth consecutive year and continuing their enviable record of only one loss since 2013. They also backed up an impressive season by winning the South East Zones and finishing runner up in the Canterbury five-aside tournament. The senior Sumner and Our Lady Star of the Sea composite rugby team also deserves a special mention with a well fought out 3rd placing in what was an open weight division. Avonhead Primary eventually going on to win the grade. The Sumner senior rugby team also went on to win the Zones and place 5th in the Canterbury Winter Tournament. Lastly our netball girls had three teams compete in the Friday competition with a well earned third placing in A Grade and also placing 1st in the South East Zone Tournament. Well done to all teams!

Explore the Science of Character, Meaning and Purpose - Sumner School is Cultivating Character...come see how!
Wednesday, September 13, 4:00pm to 6:00pm
Come to this Meetup to share with the Sumner community as they explore the Science of Character, Meaning and Purpose on the Fourth Annual Character Day. "Character Day is about bringing us all together to spend a day focusing on who we are, and who we want to be -- for ourselves, our families, and the world," said Tiffany Shlain, co-founder of Character Day and founder of the Webby Awards.
Sumner School is taking part in the day to Cultivate Character and in the afternoon will be bringing the Sumner community, learners and teachers from Sumner School together to have conversations around:
What kind of person am I and who do I want to be in the world? How can I build empathy, grit and courage and how can we as a community do this together?
Why should you come?
If you are wanting to discuss an idea around how to better connect with your learning community then this is the Meetup for you! Come see how Sumner students and the wider learning community come together to engage in conversations in order to share and design ways that they can build character through community relationships and collaboration.
Before you venture to the Meetup we invite you to think about...What are your strengths? Why is it important to know this?
Take the VIA strengths test to find out before you come...

Calendars and Cards

Caregiver Portal for our Student Management System
The Caregiver Portal for our new Student Management System, Edge, has now been activated. This enables you to view your child’s contact details, attendance and payment details. The portal address is: https://parent.musac.school.nz/loginpage_caregiver.aspx
Login using your existing account and password at Google+, Yahoo, Facebook or Windows Live. Alternatively click on ‘manually enter your login details’ using the email address you have supplied to school and request a password via the ‘forgotten password’ option.
Your contact details are listed on the Edge Caregiver home page. If any of these details require updating please email the changes required to admin@sumner.school.nz. The school no longer forwards requests to parents to update their details. There are many occasions when school needs to quickly contact parents during the school day so it is important that caregivers are proactive regarding keeping contact details current.
Click on your child’s name to access the Summary, Attendance and Payments tabs. There are currently no reports loaded onto this site, but the school is looking at working towards this area.
Payments cannot be made via this portal, but you are able to see if there is unallocated credit on your account, the details of unpaid items and the balance.
