Property Update
Our building programme is progressing well with the initial stages of the two story block foundation almost complete. The new caretakers compound is also close to being finished and Trevor will be moving in there over the next week or so. The next major stage will commence immediately after the school year ends and will involve the demolition of the administration block.
Fences will be placed around the perimeter of the new admin block immediately after the last day of school on the 19 December. These fences will remain in place throughout the time the new administration block is under construction making access off Colenso Street very limited. I would encourage you to consider alternative entry points into the school such as Hardwicke Street or Dryden Street while the admin block is being built.
We will gradually be decanting the admin block into the back rooms of the hall during the last week of the term. From the beginning of the 2019 school year, the reception office and sick bay will be operating out of Room 8 and the Senior Leadership Team will be working collaboratively in the Nancy Meherne Room.
At this stage the overall project is on track to be completed by the end of Term 3, 2019. We will keep you posted with any developments.
Thank you to the PTA
The last PTA meeting of the year will be held on Monday night (7pm in the staffroom). This dedicated group of parents have done an amazing job again this year not only in terms of raising funds but also in providing opportunities for our community to come together in a number of different formats.
Their efforts this year have seen them raise close to $40,000 for the school! Some of this money has enabled us to purchase library books, chromebooks and robotics equipment. The bulk of the funds will go into developing landscaping projects around the school when our buildings have been completed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Amanda Price (PTA Chair) and everyone else that has contributed to the PTA this year whether that be through the organisation of fundraisers, attending meetings or supporting events.
I firmly believe that one of the real strengths of our school is the willingness of parents to contribute in a number of different ways. This could take the form of support for teachers in classrooms, supervision of road patrol, helping with the gardens, providing transport or assisting on school camps to name but a few.
A reminder that the Board of Trustees would like to acknowledge the amazing support we have received by extending an open invitation to all parents and caregivers to attend a Parent Helpers’ Breakfast on Thursday 13 December at 8.15am in the Hall Foyer. Please RSVP to the Office for catering purposes before Monday 10 December. This event will be immediately followed by the Years 5-8 Awards Assembly, which begins at 9.15am in the Hall.
Class Placement Requests
Thank you to the parents who have written in with class placement requests for 2019. This opportunity has now closed. Where possible these requests will be factored into the class lists that will be sent home on Monday 17 December.
Please note that your child’s final written report will be sent home with them on Friday 14 December.
Have a great weekend.

2018 School Financial Year
The school's financial year ends on 31 December. Requests for Payment of term activities were emailed to parents this week. We would be extremely grateful if these could be settled before the end of the term, as payments received in our 2019 financial year create a great more work to reconcile.
If you did not receive a request please check the current status of your financial details on the parent portal or email me: sstevens@sumner.school.nz

Canterbury Triathlon Results
In the past week the Year 5 to 8 Sumner students have been involved in triathlon with the first event being the local school event. For a couple of hours Sumner was turned into a sea of blue and teal, as athletes raced to be the first in their age groups as individuals and as teams. It was great to see almost all the students involved as an individual or as part of a team.
After the Sumner race the top six place getters in each age group then had the choice to go on and race the best athletes in Canterbury in the very competitive and gruelling Canterbury Triathlon Championships. In what can only be described as absolutely atrocious conditions the athletes battled rain, wind and the frigid waters of Pegasus Lake to place in year-level-fields of over 100 athletes with all posting excellent times and personal performances. Although a list of results for the Canterbury and Sumner events are posted below, it needs to be emphasised that the technical timing system for the Year 6 boys failed for their swimming leg and left the organisers with the headache of figuring out the final places. Unfortunately working with limited information and results the organisers could only narrow down the places to what is posted below. On that note I have to thank Lynn Miles for the way in which she has attempted to resolve the problem. I would also like to compliment the way in which the Year 6 boys have handled what was a challenging and disappointing situation. Lastly, thank you to all the parents who assisted with both events. These are such difficult events to run that we couldn’t give the children the opportunity to race without your help.

Over Anniversary weekend Morgan competed in the Canterbury Primary and Intermediate schools tennis tournament at Wilding Park representing Sumner School. As a result of her performance at this tournament she qualified for the NZ Tennis South Island Primary and Intermediate Schools Finals which was held on Monday and Tuesday this week in Timaru. She was competing against top players from all over the South Island. Morgan did very well at what is a pretty tough tournament coming 8th in the Year 8 singles and 2nd in the Year 8 doubles - an amazing achievement. |

The Sumner Silver Band
The Sumner Silver Band is Sumner’s local brass band. The band has been part of the community for over 100 years. We participate in community events such as the annual Community Carols, ANZAC remembrances services, and community events in St Leonard’s Square and Redcliffs Park. We also have played carols at local rest homes and even at the Sumner kindergarten.
The band wishes to recruit new members, be they young or older (this is directed at you, the parent) which is the only way to ensure the survival of any such small community organisation. We seek brass players of trumpet/cornets, trombones or any other brass band instrument. The band is also keen to recruit percussionists.
We believe that regular playing with a band such as ours is the best way to further playing skills and the obvious benefits that such skills bring. In recent years we have had three young members who have won music scholarships, two for Christ’s College and one to St Andrews College.
Our band members are of mixed ages but we are always keen to lower that average age. We have over twenty playing members with six being female.
The band rehearses on Thursday evenings, 7.30pm to 9.00pm (any younger person need not stay the whole time) at the Redcliffs Bowling Club, James Street, Redcliffs.
There are no charges associated with being a band member as instruments and uniforms are supplied.
