Dr Jane Goodall Visit
What an amazing privilege it was to have Dr Jane Goodall visit Sumner School today. This visit was a culmination of the Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) inquiry unit all students have been working on this term using Dr Goodall's Roots & Shoots model. This approach encourages participants to contribute to environmental projects in their local area with the view that if everyone does their bit, no matter how small, it will make a big difference to the world. The philosophy of being globally aware, locally active, is something that has been an important part of our school's strategic vision for several years.
I would like to acknowledge Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Hamish Cochrane & Dr Billy Osteen from the University of Canterbury for all of their support in bringing Dr Goodall to Sumner.
Learning Conferences Tuesday 4 and Thursday 6 July
Learning Conferences will be taking place next Tuesday (4 June) from 1.40-8pm and Thursday (6 June) from 1.40-6pm. Please note that classes will finish at 1.30pm on both days. Please make arrangements to collect your child(ren) at this earlier time. Supervision will once again be provided in the Hall Foyer through until 3.00pm for any students who cannot be collected at 1.30pm. Please contact the Office if you would like your child added to the list.
If you have not already made a booking using our online system, please do so before 9am on Monday 3 July, or contact the Office directly. Any bookings after this time will need to be made directly with your child(ren)’s teacher.
A reminder that the Learning Conferences are an opportunity to share the progress and achievement your children have made in the first half of the year. It is really important that the students are involved in this process, so we strongly encourage you to have them attend the conference with you. As the focus of the conference is on learning, the last 5 minutes will be reserved for you to discuss any other concerns that you might have with your child(ren)’s class teacher. Please let your child(ren)’s teacher know at the beginning of the conference if you would like to take up this opportunity.
Canterbury Block Update
The Canterbury Block refurbishment is now in full swing and is really beginning to take shape. We were originally working towards a completion date of Monday 24 July (the first day of Term 3) but unfortunately there has been a couple of unforeseen issues which have resulted in the work being delayed by two-three weeks. We are now hoping to open the building on Monday 14 August. We will keep you updated if this is likely to change.
Cultural Narrative Feedback
Thank you to the 19 people who have submitted comments on our draft Cultural Narrative. We have had some very positive feedback to date and are encouraged by the support the Cultural Narrative has received.
If you would like to make a submission please click here. The narrative was emailed out to you on 21 June. The survey will remain open through until 9am on Monday 3 July.
Skateboarding on the Van Asch Grounds
We have been contacted by staff at Van Asch Deaf Education Centre who are concerned about Sumner School students (identified by their uniform) using the tar sealed slopes to skateboard down. There have been a couple of near-miss incidents with cars who have not seen the children on their skateboards. If you do have a child who spends time at Van Asch please reinforce to them that using the slopes for skateboarding is not safe or an appropriate use of the school grounds.
Quiz and Raffles Tickets
Thank you to everyone who supported last week’s PTA Quiz Night by entering a team, contributing to the gift basket and/or selling raffle tickets. In total we managed to raise a little over $10,000. This is a fantastic effort!
On the night, 24 teams vied for Sumner trivia supremacy. Congratulations to team Insert Name Here who took out the quiz again this year. A huge thank you to Amanda Price, Rachel Wright and everyone else who helped out on the night.
Finally, as another action-packed term draws to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your ongoing support and wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday.
Ngā mihi
