Dear Parents & Caregivers
Principals Summary
Progress on the Canterbury Block
It’s great to see work on the Canterbury Block (Rooms 16-20) start and contractors have now successfully completed the strip out phase of the refurbishment project, however during that process, they have discovered remnants of old building materials underneath and within the building containing traces of asbestos. Thankfully these are safely contained beneath the floor, however the next phase of building works has the potential to disturb them so the project has to be put on hold while we work with the contractors to remove the risk before proceeding further.
This will delay the completion of the project and we now anticipate that it will be finished by the end of Term 2.
Skateboards and Scooters – We need your help
We are finding that a number of children are not following our rules about using scooters, skateboards and bikes at school. Please note that children are only allowed to use scooters and skateboards on the Junior Netball Court before and after school. Bikes are not allowed on the netball courts. This is purely about safety as the school gets very congested around these times. I have had a couple of people mention to me that they have had children on skateboards and scooters run into them as they walk around corners.
Children are also not permitted to scooter, skateboard or bike on the new AstroTurf court. This will cause damage to the court, which may result in significant expense to repair it.
We need your support to reinforce these rules. It is very difficult for teachers to keep track of around 430 children leaving their classrooms all at the same time. Please help to support our teachers by insisting that your child does not scooter, bike or skateboard around the school grounds before and after school (including pre-schoolers). We respectfully also ask parents to role model walking their scooter, skateboards and bikes through the school grounds. I’m sure that you would appreciate that it is a little awkward for teachers to have to ask parents to hop off their bikes and skateboards.
We have informed the children that ‘repeat offenders’ will have their scooters, skateboards or bikes confiscated temporarily and/or be asked not to bring them to school in the future.
Thank you for your support. I’m confident we can get on top of this issue if we work together on it.
Tsunami Drill
Please note that we will be holding another combined tsunami evacuation drill with Redcliffs, Van Asch and Our Lady Star of the Sea Schools at 10am Wednesday 15 March. We expect to be back at School around 11am.

What's Coming Up?
Are you ready to party? The PTA's big fundraiser for 2017 is the School Dance and this year it’s 80's prom style on Saturday, 1 April. There will be oodles of entertainment, food and so much music to dance the night away with the live band Puree and Funk DJ Soul Provider, plus the chance to win an ultimate 80’s thrill.
Tickets are $65 and available from the school office now. All profits go to supporting our school.
What to wear? If you don't want to dress up, just throw on your favourite party gear and come have fun. If you do feel like getting into the theme, dust off those 80's prom dresses, suits, cummerbunds and bow ties. We're heading back in time and best dressed guys and girls will be crowned on the night! Inspiration can be found on the Facebook page.
Keen to help or sponsor? If you or your business would like to contribute with any skills or sponsorship, contact sumnerschooldance@gmail.com. All offers welcome and appreciated.
THANK YOU
