Tena koutou e te Whānau,
Welcome to Oscar V and Maui M who started school recently.
Welcome to Oscar V and Maui M who started school recently.
It is VERY hard to believe that December is pretty much upon us and we only have 3 weeks left - not that I am counting…! I know that Term 4 has been an incredibly busy one full of lots of opportunities, but it’s not over yet! The next couple of weeks will be a busy time at Sumner School as we come together as a school to celebrate the achievements and successes of 2020.
Spotlight on end of Year events... Over the next couple of weeks we have a number of special events booked in. These begin next week with a special day with John Parsons on Tuesday 1 December where all students will be able to listen and learn about internet safety and digital citizenship at an age appropriate level. A reminder that parents and whānau also have the opportunity to attend a session held at Te Raekura Redcliffs School from 7-8.30pm. Please register your interest in attending this presentation here.
This is followed by our School Music Concert from 6pm on Thursday 3 December where our young musicians will showcase their learning from the year, and our whole school Christmas Concert on Friday 4 December at 9.15am. All welcome!
Our final whole school assembly will be taking place on Thursday 10 December from 1.30pm. As part of this assembly we will be farewelling Mrs Ronene Kelland and celebrating her dedication to our school over the last 30 years. You are all warmly invited to attend this assembly and join us in thanking Mrs Kelland.
On Friday 11 December our Board of Trustees will be hosting a special breakfast in the Hall Foyer from 8.10am to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has their given time to supporting the school this year. Please RSVP if you wish to attend: admin@sumner.school.nz. This will be immediately followed by the Years 5-8 Awards Assembly at 9.15am where the children in Awaroa and Te Onepoto showing service and leadership to our school will be awarded their badges.
Please also keep a close eye on our Calendar of Events as we head towards the end of the year as I know individual teams have special events planned too.
Spotlight on the end of year reports… Alongside everything else that has been happening in the last 3 weeks, teachers and students have also been busily completing end of year assessments. This gives teachers all of the information they need to be able to make OTJs (Overall Teacher Judgements) as to whereabouts in the curriculum children are working. To do this teachers use a variety of information including formal testing, the work students complete during learning tasks, observations from within class and discussions with other teachers. These assessments form part of the report writing process which teachers are busily completing as we speak ready to be shared with families during the last week of term, but they also provide us with the information we need to identify trends for school wide areas for improvement, enable us to identify the students in 2021 who will benefit from additional intervention and support with learning and help us to identify those students who may need extension next year. These reports will again be shared with you via Hero. Please note we will be turning off parental access to the reporting function of Hero from Friday 11 December in order to load these reports. A notification will be sent via the App when reports are ready to be viewed.
Spotlight on finance… A reminder to please log into Hero to check finance statements for your children. Sue Stevens is regularly updating accounts in order to try and get these up to date for families. We would really appreciate your support in making your payments swiftly. Our financial year ends on 31 December and so it would make Sue’s life a lot easier if we receive these by the end of term. There is now an option for you to pay these directly via the Hero App with your credit card (2.9% charge), or alternatively pay through internet banking referencing your eldest child's name and making one payment for the family. You can now also access your own receipts via the Hero App. If you did not receive a statement please email Sue sstevens@sumner.school.nz.
And finally… Many thanks to those of you who have shared information regarding class placement requests for your children next year. As we are now working through the process of organising the structure of the classes for 2021 I am now unable to take on any further requests.
Have a great weekend with your whānau.
