Dear Parents and Caregivers
Tenei te mihi atu kia koutou. Welcome to Emma A, Skye I and Nathan S who have started school recently.
As another very busy but rewarding term draws to a close, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this week’s school production - Sumner Time Warp. This was a wonderful celebration of the arts at our school with over 450 of our students dancing, singing and acting live on stage.
The most pleasing thing for me was the way that the production brought the school and community together for a common purpose. Ultimately this has resulted in a production that we can all be very proud of.
An event like this would not be possible without hours of additional commitment from our teachers and support staff. We were also fortunate to have an army of parent helpers behind the scenes who assisted with the amazing costumes, props and makeup. Thank you all for your support.
In particular, I would like to acknowledge Caroline Morritt who directed the production. I’m sure you’ll agree that she has done a fabulous job bringing all of the elements together. Great work Caroline!
In staffing news, I would like to thank Karise Zaalberg for her contribution to Room 13 and Sumner School this year. Karise is resigning at the end of the term to concentrate on her counselling career. Bridget Scoular will take over full time in Room 13 for the remainder of the year.
Finally, as this is the last newsletter of the term, I would like to wish you all the very best for a safe and relaxing holiday and I look forward to seeing you when school returns on Monday 16 October.
Have a great Election weekend.
Ngā mihi nui

Create A Better Life
Our time together comes to an end we now leave you younger friends
Learn from all that you have seen today
You've had the chance to see the mistakes we made and the harm caused, now it's up to you to make a change
You have to take this message home, it's up to you and you alone to make a difference even when it's hard
Respect the earth it is your home don't take it for granted it could be gone, keep it clean and turn our wrongs to right
Take our dreams and make them true we place all our trust in you. Travel safe and create a better life

Aupaki Kāhui Ako Update
Term 3 has been action-packed for the Aupaki Kāhui Ako. Our staff and students have been involved in a large number of activities this term including; the Aupaki Cultural Festival, Rock Band Concert and Speech Night.
The Aupaki Tech Fest also took place this term and saw around 180 students participate in workshops over two days heavily focussed on ICT and digital learning around the theme of Making Connections. This was a very successful event and one we hope to extend to even more Aupaki ākonga next year.
Aupaki enrichment classes for our Years 7&8 students continue to take place at Linwood College. In Terms 1&2, students took part in maths and debating enrichment lessons. The focus this term has been on celebrating Pasifika culture. This culminated in a fantastic fia fia show in Week 8 featuring a combined performance from both the Aupaki and Tamai Kāhui Ako (Bamford, Bromley, Linwood Avenue, Te Waka Unua and Linwood North Schools). To our knowledge this is the first time we have had two Kāhui Ako come together for an event like this.
All of the Kāhui Ako primary schools would like to thank Linwood College for continuing to offer an enrichment programme for our senior students. We look forward to the focus shifting to robotics next term.
A representative group of teachers and students from each of the schools also took part in a one day workshop at Core Education this term. The purpose of this workshop was to gather student and teacher voice on the vision for Aupaki moving forward. A number of next steps were created from the workshop including the need to develop a logo and establish an Aupaki Student Council.
In September, several Aupaki Deputy and Associate Principals attended the annual South Island DP Conference in Timaru. This was a great opportunity for these leaders to network and build relationships at this level. They have brought back a number of innovative ideas to consider implementing across the Kāhui Ako in the near future.
The term will conclude with the Aupaki Stewardship Group meeting for the second time. This group comprises of Principals and Board representatives from all 6 schools and is tasked with overseeing the development of the Kāhui Ako. Part of this will involve keeping our Boards of Trustees and communities
up to date with all of the progress that is being made.
Finally, an important part of becoming a Kāhui Ako is working together to raise student achievement across all schools in our area. This has started with the principals coming together to share each school's assessment data, analyse trends and identify areas of strength and areas in need of improvement for our ākonga. These discussions will be broadened to include all staff members, parents and students which will result in ‘achievement challenges’ being developed and submitted to the Ministry of Education. Once the achievement challenges have been approved by the Ministry, a range of interventions will be planned to address these areas of improvement. By collaborating and sharing expertise across the Kāhui Ako, we are confident that all children will benefit.
