Tena koutou e te Whānau,
Welcome to the following International Students who have joined us recently: Ora Q, Noah and Moon C.
Term One is now well and truly in full swing with learning programmes well underway. It’s wonderful to see the students getting back into their learning programmes, building new friendships and making the most of all the opportunities that are coming their way. In assembly today we shared our Character Strength focus for the next 2 weeks at school. These are ‘Love of Learning’ and ‘Bravery’. These two Character Strengths are really important as we look ahead to setting new learning goals and as students look to take on new challenges. The first of these challenges will take place next week with our Years 5-8 Triathlon, followed the week after by Swimming Sports for Awaroa (7 and 8), Te Onepoto (5 and 6) and Tuawera (3 and 4) and Rapanui’s Splash and Dash. Many thanks to all of the parents who have volunteered their time to support us with this - we really appreciate your help. Please check upcoming events and dates on the Calendar of Events here
Spotlight on Vision and Values update….Over the last few weeks the staff and Board of Trustees have been busily finalising our new Vision and Values and forming all of the valuable feedback we received over the course of last year into a new Strategic Plan which will guide the direction of our school. This work will be completed over the next couple of weeks and I am very excited to be in a position to share all of this with you in the next whole school newsletter in Week 6. This Vision and Values will drive all that we do at Sumner School and will underpin the learning experiences that we provide for our children. Thanks again to all of you who took the time to contribute your thoughts and feedback with us. I can assure you we are working hard to make sure this is captured in our planning for 2020 and beyond.
Spotlight on health and safety… Today we completed a very successful Tsunami Evacuation Drill to Van Asch School. Our Tsunami Evacuation Drill is one of 4 drills that we complete across the school year. The other drills we practice on a regular basis are our fire, earthquake and lockdown procedures. Another area of health and safety we provide for our students is our student led Road Patrol. We are really pleased to see this back in action this year after the completion of our construction work on Colenso Street. We ask all of our students to use this crossing so that we can support them to cross safely and we urge all of our adults to set a great example to our children by doing the same. Since the start of the year we have witnessed some ‘close calls’ with adults trying to dodge cars at the top of Colenso Street and Whitfield Street and others trying to manoeuvre double parked drop offs. Please be mindful of this when dropping off and picking up your children. Also, just another reminder before the weekend that our Spider Tower on the Tuawera (Year 3 and 4) playground is still out of action.
Spotlight on sharing of learning… Today you will have been sent home your child(ren)’s QR code for connecting with Seesaw. Seesaw is the digital platform we use to enable visibility with learning within the classrooms. More information about how Seesaw works can be found here. Please also remember that there is an opportunity to pop in for a coffee and a chat on Friday of Week 4 where we will be chatting about how we share learning with you all and providing an introduction about the platforms of Seesaw and Reading Eggs.
Another means of sharing learning with you is with our first set of Learning Conferences for 2020 which will take place on Wednesday 4 March from 1.30 - 7.30pm and Thursday 5 March from 1.45pm - 5.30pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to connect with your child’s teacher, talk about how your child has settled into 2020 and to set learning goals for the year, based on the information sent home in the reports at the end of last year. As always, we strongly encourage all children to attend the Learning Conferences so they can actively participate in setting the future direction of their learning.
Once again we will be using the online system for booking conferences which will open on Monday 24 February. To book a conference you will need to visit www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the code that will be sent via an app notification separately to this newsletter. Online bookings will close on Monday 2 March at 3.00pm. If you do not have access to the Internet or need assistance booking a time, please contact the Office and they will make a booking for you.
A reminder that lessons will cease at 1.30pm on both Wednesday and Thursday. Please arrange for your child(ren) to be collected from their class at this time. We appreciate your support with this. Once again we will be providing supervision in Puna Ora (Library) until 3.00pm for those children who cannot be collected earlier. If you would like to take up this opportunity please let the Office know in advance so we can keep track of the children involved.
A reminder also that the annual library fundraiser the BIG BOOK BUY UP will be taking place during the Learning Conferences outside the library Puna Ora. Please come and look at the books on display and consider donating one to the collection.
Spotlight on ERO... a few weeks time we will be welcoming the Education Review Office to school. We are really looking forward to sharing our school with the team from ERO from Monday 16 March and working alongside them to celebrate what is working well, and to work together to establish what we can do even better. The BOT and I will keep you all updated as we work through this important process.
And finally... On Monday our amazing Parent Teacher Association (PTA) will be having their first meeting of the year at 7pm in Waiora (Wellbeing Space). If you are interested in finding out what the PTA does to help our school please come along on Monday. There is no pressure to have a specific role within the PTA or to volunteer large amounts of time, but many hands really do make light work... and they also have a HUGE impact on the opportunities and experiences we are able to provide our students.
Have a wonderful weekend with your families.
