Tēnā koutou katoa. Tēnei te mihi atu ki a koutou,
Welcome to Grace C and Ava E-S who have started at Sumner School recently.
And so Term Three is rapidly drawing to a close, but the opportunities and experiences available to our students are certainly not slowing down! Over the last fortnight we have seen a huge range of events that our children could have been involved in, including; our 81 strong Kapa haka performing at Christchurch Cultural Festival, our two rock bands performing at Aupaki Rocks, Rapanui and our STEM Club’s visit to Tūranga, Te Wiki o te reo Māori , a visit from Court Theatre and a special visit for our Rapanui and Whānau students from Rochelle Paki the Bilingual Librarian from Christchurch City Libraries. I am very aware that these events don’t happen by accident, so a huge thank you to our incredibly dedicated staff and whanau who work to enrich learning at our school.
This term has been a pretty big one for our school and community where we have seen some huge changes around our school. I would like to thank you all for the support you have shown us as we have navigated the changes to our school site and the ongoing building work. I have been incredibly proud of our staff and students this term as they have moved into and set up new learning spaces while continuing to plan and deliver exciting learning programmes that meet learners’ needs, but also harness their strengths and interests.
Since moving into our spaces Rachel Kahi (Māori Leader) and I have been working with Mātauraka Mahaanui (Ngāi Tahu Mana Whenua) on the naming of some of our new spaces so that they reflect our community and our special cultural narrative. I am really pleased to share that Ngāi Tahu have gifted the following names to us.
Our Library has been gifted the name Puna Ora which means Fountain of knowledge and wellbeing and our wellbeing space has been gifted the name Waiora which is linked to health, wellness and wellbeing. Both of these names reflect the significance of wai (water) on our community and within our Cultural Narrative. Over next term we will work to embed these names within our school and everyday language.
Spotlight on Building Update… Over the last week you will have seen that the ‘haulage road’ up the middle of our field has now been completed. This road is to enable Citycare access to the old Tuawera buildings ready for demolition and rebuild. Although less than ideal, this is unfortunately the easiest and safest route for large trucks to access our site. I spoke with the children at assembly about the importance of keeping away from these fences at all times, even during weekends when they are using the field, as they are part of Citycare’s building site. Alongside the haulage road you may also have seen that work has started on the demolition of our old school hall. Contractors are currently working to salvage parts of the roof before the diggers move in for demolition. With the amount of heavy machinery working in this area we have closed the Wiggins Street access to the school site. Please ensure your children are using the Hardwicke entrances instead.
Spotlight on Learning Conferences… A reminder that Learning Conferences will be taking place next Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure that you have booked an appointment with your child’s teacher and completed the pre-conference form that was sent home by paper and email earlier this week. If you haven't done so already you can book a conference easily by clicking on this link and using the unique code available from the Office or your child's teacher. Bookings will close at 3pm on Monday. Please also remember that school will finish at 1.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday to enable Learning Conferences to take place. We would appreciate your child(ren) being collected from school at this time, but if you are unable to we will be able to provide supervision until 3pm in the new library. Please contact the Office to add your child to the list. Email: admin@sumner.school.nz or phone 326 6546.
Spotlight on revisioning… Many thanks to those of you who have taken the time to complete the questionnaire for our revisioning work or popped into our coffee morning with the BOT. So far we have had 93 responses from our community. Your ideas really are invaluable to us as we co-construct our new Vision and Values together. We will be closing off the online survey next Wednesday so if you haven’t already and would like to share your thinking please do so here. The Board of Trustees will be working to summarise all of our thoughts and ideas into a (very) draft Vision and Values during early Term 4. We will then invite further feedback from you all in the form of a ‘speed dating’ discussion group evening. Our thinking behind this is that we will have facilitated discussions on the main themes that we have drawn out from our consultation led by passionate community members, staff and our Board of Trustees. Our community will then be invited to wander the hall opting into areas of interest to ensure their thoughts and thinking are captured clearly. More information on the date for this evening will follow next week.
Not Returning or New Entrant Enrolment 2020... We will be starting the process of organising the school structure for next year early next term. If for any reason your child(ren) will not be returning to Sumner School in 2020, could you please let the Office know as soon as possible by emailing: admin@sumner.school.nz. In addition, if you have a younger sibling that will be turning five in 2020 we would greatly appreciate you filling in an enrolment form as soon as possible at the Office. This helps us considerably with our planning for next year.
And finally… As this is the last newsletter for the term I would like to wish you all a very happy and healthy holiday with your Whānau. Many thanks for all of your continued support this term and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 4!

Book Week 2019
Week 2 of Term 4 will be our annual Book Week when we celebrate the joy and importance of reading! This year's theme is ESCAPE TO EVERYWHERE: A good story can take you to another world! Friday October 25th at 9:15am in the School Hall: Book Parade. Children come dressed as a character from another world, time, planet or dimension! Please do not feel that you have to spend money on an expensive costume. Changing up something from the dress up box is a great way to go or visit the $2 clothing warehouse in Ferrymead. It is not a competition - just a chance for the children to have some fun and use their imaginations! There are a number of activities planned including a visit from Jennifer Somervell, an award winning author from North Canterbury who will be doing interactive drama and writing workshops with the students. There will also be a book swap on Friday at lunchtime. Students can drop a book off anytime during Book Week and choose a book they haven't read on Friday. Thank you Yvonne Hall - Sumner School librarian |

Health & Safety Message from Van Asch Deaf School
Van Asch Deaf School notified us yesterday of concerns they have regarding Sumner School students skateboarding, biking and scootering on their driveway and turnaround off Wakefield Ave. There have been several close calls reported by residents in cars with students riding dangerously and being completely unaware of traffic coming and going. Please remind your children if they are using the grounds of Van Asch School to be aware of the dangers and preferably have them ride elsewhere to save causing any issues with the deaf residents at the school.
