Dear Parents and Caregivers
Tenei te mihi atu kia koutou. Welcome to Quinn and Reiss F, Iona M, Jaely B and Saffie and Lillie M who have joined us this week.
Welcome back to the new term. I trust you had a safe and relaxing holiday with your whānau. We have another exciting term ahead of us with the Life Education Trust on site, school athletics and triathlon sports, a technology unit on product and design and of course all of the exciting events and functions leading up to Christmas.
On a very different note, it would be remiss of me not to mention last night's election results given the potential impact this may have on the New Zealand education system in the future. The Labour Party campaigned with an education policy that very clearly spelt out the end of National Standards in lieu of a greater focus on creativity and innovation.
This will not be an easy task given how entwined the National Standards are in our current system, but it does make for an exciting opportunity for all educators and we look forward to seeing how this policy change will come to fruition. Watch this space.
Finally, I would like to thank Joy Wang for organising the China Day celebrations in conjunction with the University of Canterbury’s Confucius Institute. Today the children were treated to a range of Chinese experiences including music and dance, artwork, traditional clothing and cooking. Joy has worked as a Mandarin Language Assistant throughout the year at Sumner School and has done a wonderful job introducing our students to Chinese language and culture.
Have a great long weekend.
Ngā mihi nui
