Dear Parents and Caregivers
Tenei te mihi atu kia koutou
Welcome to the following students who have joined us recently: Tom L, Ted M and Benjamin P.
Principals Summary
- Learning Conferences
- International Visitors
- Quiz and Raffle Tickets
Learning Conferences Tuesday 4 and Thursday 6 July.
On Wednesday you would have received an email with instructions about how to book a Learning Conference using our online system including a school specific code. If you are have any issues with this please contact the Office. Online bookings close at 9am on Monday 3 July. Any bookings after that will need to be made directly with your child(ren)’s teacher.
Please note that classes will cease at 1.30pm on both days. Once again we will be providing supervision in the Hall Foyer for those children that cannot be collected at this time. Please contact the Office if you would like to add your child to the supervision list.
International Visitors
At 10am on Monday (19 June) we will be welcoming our visitors from Riverdale Country School (New York) and Punahou School (Honolulu) with a mihi whakatau in the hall. You are most welcome to join us for this if you wish.
On Tuesday night at 7.30pm, students and teachers from both schools will be presenting to our community about Character, Context, Struggle, and Strength: Using strengths when faced with challenges.
This session will shed light on how to identify and use character strengths when faced with challenges. The presentation will also feature Karen Elizaga (author of Find Your Sweet Spot), Dr. Lucy Hone (author of What Abi Taught Us), and Dr. Billy Osteen (University of Canterbury lecturer).
According to the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, resilience is struggling through and learning from adversity by tapping into our strengths. The VIA Strengths Finder can help us rank order our strengths within the serenity of filling out the survey but what really comes to the fore when we’re in the middle of a battle? Further, are there strengths, particularly culturally situated ones, that we use that aren’t on the VIA list of 24?
To prepare for the session, please take the free Character Strengths Survey at: http://www.viacharacter.org/www/Character-Strengths-Survey and bring your results.
Entry is free. The doors will be open from 7.20pm
Quiz and Raffles Tickets
Thank you to the people who have already returned their raffle money and tickets. These need to be returned to school by next Thursday (22 June) please. As the PTA mentioned in their email last week, the raffle alone has the potential to raise over $8,000 for our new Library/Wellbeing Centre.
Like our fabulous Hall, the new Library/Wellbeing Centre will be a valuable resource not only for our children but also for the wider community for years to come. Given the limitations of the property budget we are working with, a large proportion of the new Library/Wellbeing Centre will need to be paid for through Board funds, so every last bit counts!
Another way of supporting this fundraiser is to send your child along to school with a small item for the class gift basket. This could be anything for example a bottle of wine, a movie voucher or a scented candle. We know from previous years that if everyone contributes something little, the gift baskets can end up being a veritable treasure trove for the lucky raffle winners.
Tickets for the Quiz Night are still available from the Office ($15 per person - maximum of 6 per team). If you would like to come along but are struggling to make up the numbers for a full team, please contact the office and we may be able to help with this.
Thank you for supporting this fundraiser. I look forward to seeing at the Quiz next Friday night.
Have a great weekend.
Ngā mihi

Redcliffs School Submissions
Our friends at Redcliffs School have the final part of their campaign to get their school back to Redcliffs going on at the moment. It would be great if we as a Cluster/Community of Learning could get behind them and spend literally two minutes filling in the submission form in support of their return to Redcliffs. You can do so now via the link below. Please add a short comment as this will be important during the decision making process. Please ask your friends and family to do so too. This process runs until the 26 June.

Many thanks to parent Chris Rowe who has been generously donating her time for the past 6 years to organise this great fundraiser for our school. She is ready to pass on the responsibility of this role to another parent or caregiver and she is happy to supervise a handover for anyone that might be interested. Please contact the Office for more information.

Collect, Sow and Grow Project The Gardening Group have been working with Christchurch City Council to help rejuvenate the Port Hills following the devastating fires that started in February this year. A thousand hectares of land were destroyed in the fires, wiping out native plants such as Poroporo. During the ‘Collect, Sow and Grow’ project, the Gardening Club have collected Poroporo fruit, peeled it, found the seeds, sowed them and are now waiting for the seeds to germinate, so that in November it can be replanted back in the Port Hills. |
