Dear Parents & Caregivers
Tena te mihi atu kia koutou
Welcome to the following students who joined us recently: Joe & Louis P-J.
It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of Term already. The last 11 weeks seem to have raced by. I suppose that has a lot to do with the amount of opportunities that have been made available to the children by our hard working staff. Highlights of Term 1 have included, Years 5&6 Have a Go at Sailing, the Glendal School Exchange, Swimming Sports and Splash and Dash, visits to Ferrymead Historic Park, Learning Conferences and the 80s Prom Night.
The major focus for us inside the classroom has been a school-wide unit entitled Turangawaewae (the place on which we stand). During this unit the children learned about how Sumner has been used historically with a big focus on the cultural narrative. This cultural narrative will be used to help “tell the story" of our suburb and school when our property work has been completed.
Next term the focus will move to the concept of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) where the children will explore ways of caring for our local environment including getting involved in a restoration project for the Port Hills following the bushfires. This unit will culminate in a very exciting visit to our school from a world renowned conservationist. Watch this space for more details!

In building news, I’m very pleased to inform you that the asbestos has been successfully removed from the Canterbury Block and the project is back on track. You will see from the picture to the right that only the bare bones of the original building remain. It is exciting to think that the next time we see this building it will be completely transformed.
Finally, I'd like to extend another huge thank you to the the 80s Prom Night organising committee who did an amazing job with this event. We're delighted that the Prom managed to raise around $26,000 for the school! A significant amount of this money was raised through generous sponsorship and auction prizes and we are very appreciative for the support we received. Have a safe and relaxing holiday. I look forward to seeing you all when school returns on Monday 1 May. Nga mihi Stuart Cameron Principal |

Spotlight on Excellence
Last Friday, twelve Sumner School students competed in the Huxster Primary School Mountain Bike Relay event at McLeans Island. Nearly 500 children, from 30 schools around Canterbury turned out in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie to race in teams of two around the very wet and muddy tracks; the challenge being to complete as many laps of the 4.5km circuit as possible in 3 hours.
There were some fantastic results from this relatively small group of keen Sumner mountain bikers (some schools were represented by over 50 riders). Of just six Sumner School teams, four were medal winners and placed in the top 5 in their category. Also worth a mention is the outstanding result by Amelia S and Theo B-M, who not only won the Years 7&8 Mixed Team category, but also finished in 6th place in the event overall. Well done to all the children for showing such determination and great team spirit and to all the parents involved in supporting the racers on the day!

Term 1 Activity Fees
The costs for Term 1 activities were emailed to parents near the beginning of this term. The school has already paid the suppliers of these activities, so we would be very grateful if parents could pay these costs to school by the end of term.
Duplicate Receipts for Donations
Receipts for school donations are emailed to parents at the time of payment. Please keep these in a safe place as issuing duplicate receipts is time consuming. A reminder that today is the last day to claim a $10 discount if you are paying the full amount of the school donation.
