Tēnā koutou katoa. Tēnei te mihi atu ki a koutou.
Welcome to Rosie C who joined Te Manawa last week and to returning student Ava H.
Today marked the end of a successful Book Week at Sumner School. There were plenty of highlights during the week including a very special grandparents day, a visit from author/illustrator Fifi Colston and of course, our annual Book Character Parade. As always, there were some amazingly creative costumes on display.
A big thanks goes to our librarian Yvonne Hall and all of the staff who helped organise the week’s activities.
Property Update
I’m pleased to inform you that we can now name City Care as our preferred building contractor subject to final contractual arrangements. They will be visiting school over the next few weeks with the aim of setting-up on site by the end of the month. We will keep you posted once we have confirmed the final timeframes.
For more information on our building programme please visit here.
Guided Tours of Years 7&8 Hub
As our building works begin, we anticipate that there will be some renewed interest in what our new spaces will look like. To help parents gain a better understanding of how our new buildings will function, we are offering parents the chance to be taken on a guided tour through the Years 7&8 Hub.
The first tour is taking place between 9.00am-10.00am on Tuesday 14 August where the focus will be on mathematics. We are also offering tours on Thursday 16 August 11.00am-12.00pm and Thursday 23 August 11.00am-12.00pm (Week 5). Both of these sessions will have a literacy focus.
If you would like to participate in one of the tours please contact the office.
School Closed on 15 August
A reminder that school will be closed on Wednesday 15 August as a result of primary teachers and principals taking strike action. Thank you for making alternative arrangements for your children on Wednesday. We appreciate your support.
Finally, a huge thank you goes to our PTA for organising the Viva Las Vegas Sumner event last Saturday. This was a fabulous night and a great way to bring our community together.
I would also like to thank Craig Travers from New World Redcliffs for donating 100 tickets to tonight’s All Black’s game of three halves. I saw a lot of excited faces around the school when these were delivered to classrooms.
Have great weekend.

New Principal Recruitment - Parent Consultation
As you will be aware, Sumner School is in the process of recruiting a new Principal to lead the school from 2019. The Board of Trustees has employed Terri Johnstone from Catalyst for Change Ltd to work alongside us to direct and assist this recruitment process.
Selecting the right person to lead our school is one of the most important decisions the Board will make, which is why we are asking for your feedback to ensure we find the right person for the role.
We invite you to take part in the survey linked below to gather your ideas on the future direction of our school, and your thoughts on what strengths you believe the new Principal will require to lead this vision. This survey link is being managed by Catalyst for Change Ltd, and only themed responses will be fed back to the school.
Please click here to complete this confidential survey.
This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and will close on Monday the 13 August.
We appreciate your help in this process, and warmly welcome your feedback.
Kind regards
Sumner School Board of Trustees and Terri Johnstone (Director, Catalyst for Change)
Teacher Strike Reminder
A reminder that school will be closed next week on Wednesday 15 August. Teachers are taking full day strike action and as a result of this action the Board has decided to close Sumner School for the day. Therefore, we need to ask all parents to make alternative arrangements for the care of their children on this day. The Board understands that this is likely to cause inconvenience for a number of parents, however, the school will not have the teaching resources to remain open on that day or to provide any form of safe supervision.
MASH will be operating from the School Hall for the whole day of the strike. They have informed us they have places available if you wish to use this service. Please contact them directly to enquire about costs and/or make a booking.
FUSE plans to run a programme that day as well to support the school and parents. The programme will be for Years 6-9 and run from 8:00am-3pm and consist of a sign in sign out procedure, have supervised care and structured/organised activities. The cost of this programme will be $30 per child, and they only have a maximum of 20 places available. Please email Fuse on: shoreline_youth_trust@hotmail.com or phone: 326 7467.
Thank you to all parents for supporting our teachers and Principal during the strike action.

South East Zone Winter Tournament - Year 5&6 Rugby 1st place

Last week Sumner School sent twelve teams from Years 5 to 8 to Hagley Park to compete in the South East Zone Winter Tournament. The tournament is played over half a day to determine the representative(s) for the Zone in modified versions of each winter sport. The winners, and at Years 7&8 level the runners up will play in the Canterbury Winter Tournament on Thursday 24 August against other zone winners. This year for the first time the South East Zone played in the afternoon and many of the students commented on how much they enjoyed the new time and the new formats, with many sports opting for a second tier competition. The students all competed to a high level and represented Sumner School with pride. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with the teams and lastly good luck to those going on to the Canterbury finals and the seniors who are competing in semi finals and finals of Hagley Sport in the next couple of weeks.
