Welcome to Sumner School

Welcome to Sumner School. We are a full primary school catering for students from Year 0 to Year 8 situated in a unique environment close to Sumner Beach and village. We have a current roll of around 400 students across 18 classrooms.

Our mission statement is to foster "Excellence and Effort in a Caring Environment." This is integral to our Vision for Teaching and Learning and comes through clearly in our school values. Our motto “Per Ardua Ad Alta” which translates to "Through difficulties to the heights" is also the same as Birmingham University in England. It was selected by Mr G F Allen (Headmaster of Sumner School from 1908 to 1933) in 1915, shortly after the memorable landing at Gallipoli, a battle in which many ex-pupils took part. He felt the motto to be applicable “equally to the rocky crags about the district as to the physical and intellectual achievement through sustained effort”.

We have an excellent school with lovely children, a supportive Board of Trustees, an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and an enthusiastic and capable staff. We endeavour to provide a wide variety of learning situations and experiences, and welcome the community into the school to share their skills and assist the staff.

We are fortunate to have Sumner Kidsfirst Kindergarten located on our grounds with Pebbles Preschool just around the corner. We have a close relationship with all of our early childhood centres and this ensures a seamless transition to school for a large number of children.

We hope you enjoy visiting our website and learning about our wonderful children and curriculum. Please come and visit our school, we will be happy to show you around.
